  • Bravo! + Social + Andrew & Robert’s Christmas Extravaganza

    Dear All

Congratulations to everyone for a fabulous concert on Sunday. It all came together beautifully in the end and was delivered with great energy. Well done to all of us!

While we greatly missed Neavan, we could not have asked for a better stand-in than Alex Turner. I have passed on to him our sincere thanks and the many complimentary messages from choir members.

Thank you, Robert, for recommending and putting us in touch with Alex. Above all thank you for the continued support you give to our choir, your roguish humour, exquisite playing and occasional conducting (we won’t forget last week’s rehearsal – all for good reasons!). We are so lucky to have you.

We continue to hold Neavan in our thoughts and look forward to seeing him in the new year.

First rehearsal back will be Tuesday 13th January 2026. For those who fancy a bit of work over the break (!) practice tracks may be found on the repertoire page or link here

  • Update on Sunday’s Concert

    Dear All

We’ve had an update from Neavan. He won’t be able to be with us on Sunday; sadly his mum is seriously ill so naturally he wants to stay by her side. He asked us to pass on this message to everyone:

    Dear Sheen Gate Choir,

I am very sorry I will not be present for our concert on Sunday – it is a great personal sadness to have taken you all so far and not to be with you and the culmination of all your hard work. I hope you will understand however that my place right now has to be at home with my family. It was wonderful to get a taste of you all in ‘performance mode’ at the Holly Lodge concert last week, and I have every confidence you will deliver (with a smile!!) again on Sunday. I look forward to being back with you all next month with an exciting new programme.

Until then, I’ll leave you with a few words which feel like they carry more weight this week.

“and I Look up to outer vastness unafraid And see the stars which sang when earth was made.”

Let’s all do him proud on Sunday.

Alex Turner has kindly agreed to step in and lead us for the rehearsal and concert.

It would be nice if we could video the concert for Neavan. I understand this may be possible if it is recorded as a Zoom call. If anyone has a Zoom account and could arrange for one of their guests to do that on their phone or a tablet could you let me know?

  • 14/12 Concert Arrangements + Andrew & Robert’s Christmas Extravaganza! + Social

    Dear All

What a great rehearsal on Tuesday with the multitasking maestro Robert! Well done to everyone who made it and huge thank you to Robert (and Lesley for helping out!). The run through was calming and reassuring and just what we needed with the uncertainty over Neavan. I’ve reproduced below Robert’s very helpful tips for all the tricky parts he identified. Skip down to the highlighted sections if you don’t want to read them.

For those who missed the earlier messages, Neavan has been called away on a family emergency. We’ve had no further word from him but Alex Turner from All Saints Putney is on standby to step in on Sunday if necessary. Robert has worked with Alex and I can safely say we’ll be in excellent hands should we end up without Neavan. We’ll know either way by Friday evening and I’ll pass the message on.

    Roberts Tips!

    Where Riches is Everlastingly

    – look out for timing at start of the lah lahs (the bar just before the lah lahs is short!): b22-23,42-43,68-69.

    -Upper voices: confidence! b60-64

-don’t stop to question if you’re in the right place – keep going with this one!

    The Rose

    – note page 1 has 4 beats in the bar. Page 2 onwards 3 (it helps to count time in this one)

-Most melodic phrases start at the end of a bar so look ahead (maybe count!) & be ready for them eg b4 sop, b8 alto, b21 alto etc

    -Sops: confidence! b44-56

    An die Heimat

-Page turn p29-30: the piano drops out at the very start of p30 at E. Be ready for it and ready to confidently pitch notes. We did it fine on Tuesday (once we’d had that trial run)! Similarly further down the page at F.

-p32 at H: confidence with individual part entries after H particularly tenors, altos and sops.

-p35 at L: depending on who takes us this may be taken a little more slowly than we’ve been used to

    Stars

-we have Robert’s seal of approval to sing this unaccompanied: we did it on Tuesday so we can do it on Sunday!

-the regular E flat and B flat notes are a good anchor to keep us going through the piece.

    O Radiant Dawn

    – Keep looking ahead for this one which will help with not slowing down

    – have confidence pitching note right after page turn at b17 at top of p2

    – same for high voices b25-26

    – same for coda

    Cradle Hymn

-as with O Radiant Dawn, keep looking ahead to keep this one moving

-b64 to65, note the bit (slowing down) followed by a tempo (back to speed)

    -& one from Neavan: SMILE!

The Twelve Days of Christmas & We Wish you a Merry Christmas

-we’ll run through the final 2 Chilcotts on Sunday. Neavan was very happy with our Merry Christmas at Holly Lodge

    Dear All

The Armed Man Score Order for next term: deadline to be included in bulk order is tomorrow Tues 24th Nov. Please let me know if you would like to be included. If you miss bulk order you can place order directly.

Away in a Manger: please print and bring this score tomorrow, link here (joint song with schools for Holly Lodge).

We’ll be back at Christchurch as usual for tomorrow’s rehearsal.

  • Rehearsal recap 18/11 + Away in a Manger + Music Order

    Dear All

Rehearsal on 25th Nov will be back at Christchurch as usual. We’ll start off with Stars.

Neavan was delighted with our efforts this week. Our run through of the Brahms convinced him (after admitting some doubts, it being a challenging piece!) that it should stay in the programme. Well done everyone for the obvious efforts preparing that one. We also had a nice run through of Stars and O Radiant Dawn.

An die heimat:  be aware of maintaining the ensemble singing for the less familiar/trickier bits which will help keep them together and sounding good. For the more familiar/secure sections  make the most of the nuances eg the many hairpins (louder then softer markings).

O Radiant Dawn: WATCH for the Amens at the end – they should be sung piano & with fervent, almost fearful character!

Stars: PLAY-adies is the pronunciation we’re going for in bar 16

Please print off and bring Away in a Manger, link here, to next rehearsal. This is the joint song for Holly Lodge. It’s a straight foward arrangement and we’ll look at it next week. There is also a Makaton signing video for anyone who has time to learn it – see below.

Spread the word for our concert 6pm 14/12 at Christchurch. Flyer will be available soon. Reminder that all choir members are asked to sell minimum 3 tickets for concerts so we can cover costs.

Holly Lodge 4th Dec – Away in a Manger:

We will be singing this carol with the two schools at the Holly Lodge Concert.

    Singing arrangement as follows:

Verse 1 – Children only (Sheen Mount and Clarendon)

Verse 2 &3 – Sheen Gate Choir join in at the start of verse 2 when the arrangement goes into 4 parts and sing V2&3 with children singing sop part.

Children will all be doing Makaton signing at same time as singing. They’d be delighted if anyone in the choir could join in too. Learning video below.

  • Rehearsal recap 11/11 + Next Week’s Rehearsal Venue + Local Concert + Music Order

    Dear All

    Rehearsal on 18th Nov will be at St Mary the Virgin Mortlake (see below);

As promised we had a good go at Brahms An Die Heimat covering pages 26-32 (the first 5 to H) and delighting Neavan with our evident, excellent preparation. (Keep it up!) We also ran through Chilcott’s Wish you a Merry Christmas and Riches Everlastingly,  two songs we will also be performing at the Holly Lodge concert.

Merry Christmas:  keep the energetic bounce all the way through

Riches Everlastingly: critical to watch Neavan all the way through for this one – hold scores up so you can see him at the same time as reading

Spread the word for our concert 6pm 14/12 at Christchurch. Flyer will be available soon. Reminder that all choir members are asked to sell minimum 3 tickets for concerts so we can cover costs.
